Ashford Town Bowls Club : Ashford

Ashford Town Bowls Club

About Ashford Town Bowls Club

Welcome to the gateway page for Ashford town centre Bowls club. An oasis within the town centre!

Members of Ashford Town Bowls Club celebrated its’ CENTENARY in 2009.

The present “ Clubhouse “ has been in use since 1909 !!! . The whole building (wooden) is, to say the least, showing its’ age ! The floor is gradually giving way, and there are various gaps in the entire structure. The Home and Visitor’s Changing Rooms (Male) was, in fact, a very old wooden Railway Carriage, dating from 1890 something ! .Unfortunately, our Lady members (and their visitors) fare no better, and have to change in a rather dilapidated “ shed “ tacked onto the left side . All Toilet Facilities are “ Al Fresco “ , being located externally. Regrettably there is no provision for Disabled persons

After weeks of thorough and painstaking research ( in the course of which we received very professional, and much appreciated assistance from various ABC officers ) the plans for a cost effective new structure have been finalised................around £170,000

How then are we to raise this amount?

The Club will be applying to, inter alia , the Lottery, Ashford Borough Council, European Sports Development, and some 20 plus other Bodies . It is our understanding that such Applications would, quite rightly, be viewed more favourably if accompanied by evidence of vigorous and sustained effort on the part of the Applicants to explore and exploit all other means of raising funds.

The Bowls Club is a “picturesque Oasis of peace and tranquillity “ in an otherwise built-up, traffic - blighted setting and it certainly enhances the character of the Town Centre ( Portas take note ! ) as is obvious from the pleasure it gives to those passing by (often foreign visitors ) who stop and chat

The popularity of Bowls has greatly increased in recent years, and most noticeably among younger people. Indeed this Club is proud of our enthusiastic and very competent younger members. Two have gained County Honours and one, who started four years ago - aged nine -plays in County level competitions. We need to provide good facilities to encourage and retain such players !

In the “ 60s “, and up until recent times, our membership ( and , as a result, Income)was boosted by players from local businesses such as Bachelors, Lloyds Bank, Ashford Police, etc., who paid for a “ Block “ membership for their employees. It would be great if this “ Business League “ could be resurrected.... Give it some thought you Employers out there !

A new Clubhouse would be a great asset in attracting new Bowls Players ( and in retaining some ). At present we also have a thriving Darts League on alternate Fridays In planning for the new building, we have envisaged providing a venue for other, suitable, small Clubs who cannot otherwise afford their own premises . This would benefit the Community, generally, whilst enhancing our viability

At present , in the designated Growth Area that is Ashford, our Club has just ONE Sponsor ! - Orbital Motors - to whom we are very grateful for the money which pays for printing our Fixtures Books and Scorecards ( both of which are well circulated in East Kent ). Also, we are awaiting a decision from ABC as to Advertising around the Club perimeter! How about sponsoring your Logo on ATBC shirts, or funding one of our Special Events days, etc.,?

Details of all Sponsors will be published regularly, we hope, in TN24, and the Local Press

As a Club we are getting by, financially, but we are not struggling when it comes to success in Competitions against other Clubs in Kent . We need your support if this is to continue and, indeed, increase. There is only one other Bowls Club in the town area –the former British Rail – and its, future is not known.

Please respond to this Appeal if, like us, you would not wish to see the demise of one of Ashford’s oldest Sports Clubs. Ashford must not lose more of its’ Heritage !

Please feel free to contact Ron FOX – 01233 629147 - , Brian STACEY ( Chairman ) - 01233 631318, or Gill HOWARD ( Treasurer ) – - if you require any additional information
